Importation of soluble coffee drying system involves 4 countries, special customs regime and a lot of logistics

The Brazilians’ love for coffee and the will to undertake do not only move mountains, but also ships, containers, trucks and a lot, a lot of logistics!

Coffee is the second most consumed beverage by Brazilians, second only to water, with Brazil being the second largest consumer of coffee in the world, according to data from ABIC (Brazilian Association of the Coffee Industry). According to the International Coffee Organization (ICO) and Dieese, on average, Brazilians drink 3 to 4 cups a day, which is equivalent to about 5.8 kg of the drink per year.

And to show the capacity and quality of our coffee to the world, we need to produce more and better, and therefore invest in advanced technology and equipment. If, on the one hand, there is a factory eager to import equipment capable of assisting in the production of a special soluble coffee line, on the other, it has an Integrated Logistics company capable of planning, organizing and executing this task in an agile, transparent and efficient way.

And it was with the help of LOGTRADE/FGL GLOBAL, that Cocam, a Brazilian soluble coffee company with more than 50 years in the market, imported a special soluble coffee drying system for its freeze-dried coffee line, a product much appreciated by consumers of soluble coffee due to the maintenance of the flavor and aroma levels of the roasted coffee used in its manufacture.

“In the freeze drying process (which is precisely the imported equipment), the concentrated coffee extract is first frozen at around minus 40°C in a cold chamber, and then ground to the shape/size of the final product. This frozen and granulated product is then processed in a vacuum drying tunnel, where it receives a small amount of heat, so that the water, present in the product in the form of ice, sublimes, that is, it passes directly from the solid form to the steam form, leaving the coffee granules dehydrated. Due to the low degree of heating that this product is subjected to in the drying stage, we have an instant coffee of higher sensory quality in terms of flavor and aroma than other types of soluble coffees resulting from other processes.

Cocam is the only company in Brazil that has the raw coffee decaffeination process technology, offering soluble coffees and concentrated coffee extracts also in the decaffeinated version. The company has more than 60 different products in its catalogue, in Spray-Dried, Agglomerated, Frozen Coffee Extract versions, in addition to the lyophilized product already mentioned in this article, including these variations in decaffeinated form.

Present in 35 countries, Cocam invested 15 million Euros to increase the production capacity of its freeze-dried coffee line by up to 70%. The import process took about 1 year, including strategy, planning and execution, since it involves extensive and complex customs legislation, international port and road logistics management, from end to end.

Curiosities and challenges of this IMPORT (commonly known as PROJECT CARGO)

About 500 tons of equipment, coming from 3 different countries (China, Denmark and Italy) to Catanduva, in the countryside of São Paulo! Logistics planning, by itself, is already a challenging mission, imagine big projects like this one. LOGTRADE/ FGL GLOBAL were the companies responsible for importing (from door to door) a complete coffee drying system. “The international logistics sector has been going through a challenging scenario and the synergy between all the participants in the chain was the success factor in this operation, the package of solutions that involved customs intelligence, international/national logistics in sync with federal revenue was decisive for that the delivery was carried out within the established deadlines and at the lowest possible cost”, explains Fábio Maia, Commercial Director of FGL Global.

The international purchase of this combination of machines took place through the Ex-Tariff, where this was claimed and obtained with imports at the I.I. rate at 0%, a special customs regime for project cargo, with a single D.I. and partial deliveries of the various shipments made and ICMS benefit. “Obtaining the Ex-Tariff and, above all, concluding a project with this benefit means a drastic reduction in the cost of imports for our client, since in addition to non-payment of I.I. (Import Tax), all other taxes in the chain (IPI and ICMS) are reduced in a cascading effect, since the I.I. is part of the calculation base for these taxes”, comments André Magalhães, CEO of LOGTRADE Logística Integrada.
